There are multiple places around and in Texas Tech University where you could recycle the only problem is that most of these places are quite far from most people living on campus. They are also not so well known by people who want to recycle but aren't dedicated to going out of their way to recycle. I also have noticed very little amounts of recycling bins scattered around campus. They are often located in buildings and near some select printing machines, which are often emptied or never used. Another problem I see while looking on the websites of these Recycling centers is that they don't want any plastic bags while recycling due to them clogging up the machines. This makes me wonder if the custodians are even recycling these containers due to how long you would need to travel to just recycle a couple of pieces of paper and then throw away the bag or even reuse it.
Did you Know?
Plastics can take up to 20-500 years to decompose and it won't even be fully gone, I'll just keep growing smaller.
only 9% of plastic worldwide is recycled and some countries are even banning single-use plastics.
recycling plastic saves about 2 times more energy than putting it through a trash incinerator.
Texas Tech Recycling Center
According to ttuhub.net this place used to be busy but also lost a lot of money. They would recycle a lot of products "Over the past 11 years this site was responsible for 450 tons of waste"(Nations). This Location according to the hub ceased its operations due to many reasons all rotating around money and Covid. One reason is that Texas Tech wasn't receiving any money for recycling anything. Another reason is that it costs about half a million dollars a year to run and they only got 10% back from them. This place reopened in 2021 and they now transport their materials to another location to be more cost-efficient. They take aluminum various papers and plastics. They also recycled 21 tons of cardboard moving day during fall 2020 which was the final year of the program. With their actions, Texas Tech earned a Bronze rating from the STARS report.
